Mozambique Safari

Explore more of Mozambique

As you fly down Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coastline you see dozens of tiny islands and archipelagos glinting in the sunlight surrounded by colorful reefs. Islands like Vamizi and Benguerra which provide some of the world’s finest luxury beach hideaways.

Mozambique’s islands are so remote that they are usually reached by light aircraft or helicopter. You may share your island with just twenty other guests and the sense of peace and privacy makes them wonderfully romantic.

At Azura lodge on Benguerra Island you stay in a spacious stylish suite with sumptuous furnishing and private pool a few steps from the deep blue ocean. While Azura is supremely relaxing it also has some of the finest diving in the Indian Ocean, with magnificent shallow reefs and challenging wall diving.

Most of Mozambique’s island hideaways offer a wide variety of watersports and exciting deep sea fishing. You can start the day fishing for marlin and tuna and end it on a lazy dhow ride sailing silently off the golden shoreline. Some of these tiny islands have a fascinating culture. Ibo island has a long history of high quality silversmith work and you can pick up some delightful jewellery from the friendly local craftsmen. There are old forts and other evidence of the island being controlled by different colonial powers in the eighteenth century.

These islands combine easily with big game viewing on a Mozambique safari. Gorongosa National Park has antelope, cats, buffalo and dozens of species in forest and savannah landscapes.

You can also combine your island stay with a safari in Tanzania, Kenya or South Africa. The northern islands of the Quirimbas are easily accessible from Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) so a stay here can be easily combined with a Tanzania safari to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. The southern Mozambique islands are easily accessible from Johannesburg and the Kruger, and the Mozambique coastline is the ideal luxury beach location to combine with a South African vacation.
