Central Kalahari Game Reserve

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is an enormous game reserve twice the size of Massachusetts! The Kalahari is the largest sand basin in the world stretching over 1,560 miles from the Atlantic coast to Western Zimbabwe. The reserve is known for its vast dunes desert adapted trees and other shrubs. Most of the land is flat scenic undulating bushveld and grassland. There are also fascinating fossilised river valleys and isolated salt pans.

The rain falls in the summer and can be sporadic varying from 170 to 700 ml per year. The summer season in the Kalahari begins in November and continues through to March. After the rain falls, a clear blue picturesque sky spreads from horizon to horizon. Grassland flourishes and for a few months the Kalahari becomes a paradise for animals. Thousands of gemsbok, springbok, giraffe and hyena thrive here. Comical warthog, eland, kudu and wildebeest also roam the plains. Predators are never far including prides of majestic lion, cheetah, leopard, jackal and unrelenting packs of wild dog hunting their prey. This is one of the best wildlife reserves for game viewing in the whole of Botswana. The Kalahari is able to compare with the Serengeti and Masai Mara for the incredible numbers of animals here.

The Bushmen have been living in the area for thousands of years. Once nomadic hunters and now leading a more evolved lifestyle - they live in the southern region of the reserve.
