Masai Mara

Known by the locals as the Mara, the Masai Mara Game Reserve is perhaps the most famous of all Africa's wildlife reserves. The breathtaking rolling plains, dotted with acacia trees and roaming Masai in their traditional red cloaks create a setting people imagine when they dream of Africa.

During the amazing "great migration" from July to October, over two million zebra, gazelles and wildebeest make their way from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara with spectacular river crossings along the way creating superb game viewing! Though the migration is only present for four or five months of the year, wildlife is still abundant all year round. Prides of lion relaxing in the shade, cautious cheetah and leopard quiet in the heat of the day before the evening sets in and hunting prey becomes a priority. Giraffe wander casually plucking leafs from the towering trees whilst antelope bound through the lush green grass.

The Masai Mara has some superb safari lodges. Cottars 1920's Camp manages to capture the traditional "out of Africa" feel with luxurious white canvas tents. The staff open the sides during the day so you can relax and enjoy the classic Mara scenery from your tent. Relax with a sundowner in the evening under the magnificent African sky enjoying fine wine and reflect on the wonders you have experienced that day. With expert guiding, style and inspiring cuisine, Cottars leaves you with unforgettable memories.

If you have a passion for Africa, the Masai Mara simply can't be missed. Between game drives you can also visit the local tribes, villages and schools for an insight into their culture and day to day lives.
